Animals make an excellent introduction to three-dimensional creations. The
familiar shapes allow students to focus on working with the medium!
Animals can be created with any sculpture medium! Choices include kiln-fired
clay (firing not included), air-dry clay or plastiscene.
The giraffe pictured is made with plastiscene. A wire frame was made using
telephone wire. Brown and yellow plastiscene were blended to create the golden
brown base colour which was sculpted over the entire frame. Brown markings
were applied over the base and black dots were added for eyes. Plastiscene
sculptures can be made with or without the frame depending on use and longevity.
Non-framed pieces will "melt" under hot lights or sun but are easier
to "recycle" into new creations. Framed sculptures are recommended
for animation or long term work.
