Self-portrait

(A favorite of my regular teachers! I love overhearing the older kids ooohing & ahhhing over "younger kids'" artwork! For Grade 3's, this project will work well in oil pastel, pencil or charcoal sketching.)

This lesson may take a bit more time!!! We will need a FULL 1.5 hours of working time when using oil pastel!

(A really good introduction to watercolour painting. Grade 3 artists will learn the benefits of simplification and editing, as well as using basic lines to give the illusion of distance. This lesson would also work for pencil, charcoal sketching or tempera painting.)

(What kid doesn't love cartoons? But do they know how they're drawn? Grade three students will learn to create their own character using basic shapes and features. Learn how to make your characters show emotion! What do you want people to feel when they look at your character? Learn advanced inking and shading skills.)

Create a still-life with pumpkins, apples and pears. Emphasis on using light and shade to create the illusion of roundness.

Pumpkins

(We drew many pumpkins last October! A veritable field of the jolly orange orbs! This lesson can also be done without the face. Excellent for oil pastels, tempera painting or watercolours. We can even make spiffy clay pumpkins if you like!)

Snowman

(A whole glacier worth of snowmen were created last Winter! We sketched 'em, we painted 'em, we oil pasteled 'em as well! These turn out wonderfully no matter what medium you choose!)

Chilly Penguin

(A cute new alternative to the always popular snowman! Learn basic drawing & shading skills. Grade 3's have the skills needed to create incredible looking penguins!.)

Pacific Dogwood

(Grade 3's will learn basics of drawing realistic flowers, leaves and branches! Learn shading techniques. B.C.'s Provincial Flower... well, it's actually modified white leaves surrounding a tiny orangish blossom cluster but we can draw it! Paint it, too! Oil pastel would be lovely.)

Poinsettia

'Tis the season! The poinsettia is an excellent shading lesson. Learn to 'pop' the lighter shades out from the darker shades! An excellent lesson in colour blending... you'd never know that 7 colours of oil pastel are blended together in the sample above!

Blossoming Cherry Tree

Feel the softness of the petals as they drift gently in the spring breeze. Learn to paint or draw a cherry tree in full blossom. The simplicity of the subject allows more time to explore detail and colour!
